Bharakahu murder case:

Board says love-sick killer Mehek is adult

ISLAMABAD: A four-member medical board, after her medical examination as per the orders of session court, on Tuesday declared that the age of Zahra Mehek is over 20 years.
According to the board, Zahra Mehek, accused for murdering Shahzadi Bibi, aged 11, and Sawera Hakim, aged over 18, was taken to Poly Clinic Hospital for her medical check-up to verify her age as per the request of the lawyers of Shahzadi Bibi.
The medical board consisted of four doctors, namely Dr. Ahsan, chairman of the board and medical specialist, surgeon doctor Javed, dentist Dr Tajammul, and Dr. Tanveer, who is medico-legal surgeon. The board after examining the accused declared that Mehek is over 20 years of age and should not be considered as an adolescent.
Dr. Tanveer told The Spokesman that, “The medical board examined the age of the accused by following different methods and all of the results proved that the accused is not less than 20 years old. The verification process took one hour while the final report has been submitted to the police immediately”.
On Monday, the lawyers of Zahra Mehek during her hearing in court had requested the session judge Kausar Zaidi to grant relaxation to her client by declaring her a juvenile as according to her academic documents she is 17 years old, while law council of Shahzadi Bibi and Sawera Hakim on the other hand requested that age of the accused should be verified medically, for which, Justice Kausar Zaidi adjourned the court till 4th April after giving orders to conduct a medical examination of the accused to verify her age.
Advocate Raja Rizwan Abbasi, member of legal counsel of Sawera Hakim and Shahzadi Bibi, when contacted told The Spokesman, “It is common in our society that the parents show their children younger than their real age in their educational documents just to gain some benefits in future and same happened with Zahra Mehek’s case. Her lawyers, in reference to her educational certificates, claimed that she was a juvenile.
On the other hand, advocate Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, the counsel for Zahra Mehek, when contacted, showed dissatisfaction over the medical report. “Her parents have mentioned her real age in her educational documents. However, I think the medical report is not authentic as the father of one of the diseased girls is a highly influential police official and he might have used his influence on the medical report,” advocate Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta said.
