Crime Story:

Zia Masjid a den of criminals, police silent

ISLAMABAD: The Zia Masjid area, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Shahzad Town police, has become a den for criminals. The police concerned are, however, is silent on the issue.
Last Monday, a salesman of a cellular company was robbed in broad daylight in the area of Bilal Town near Zia Masjid. A resident of the town while talking to The Spokesman said, “Ali had come to deliver mobile cards to a general store in Bilal Town. While leaving the store, two men appeared on a motorbike and asked him to hand over his cash and other precious stuff. They were carrying pistols which made Ali to follow their demand.”
He further said that they took the Ali’s bag in which he was carrying cash and mobile cards worth Rs 500,000 and tried to escape. Seeing this the area people tried to block the robbers’ way. “Upon seeing a heavy resistance they started firing into the air which scared the citizens. Then they managed to escape successfully,” he added. He said the police arrived after two hours of the incident but at that time there was nothing for them to trace the robbers.
In another incident a dead body of a girl was recovered from a green belt near Zia Masjid area on Wednesday, who was brutally shot a bullet on her head and is still to be identified. The dead body was shifted to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences by Police officials but could not find any clue of the murderer. Jamal Akbar, a resident of the area said that the dead body was fresh and was thrown in the area on Wednesday morning while there are several check post of the police but the police has failed to enforce law and order in the area as it is not possible to drop a dead body in a crowded area on broad day light if the police officials are active on their duties.
Earlier, a stolen car was also recovered from the area of Bilal Town months ago which was later traced as it was the same vehicle that was used in a robbery incident in Sihala. Haji Nazir, resident of the Bilal Town said that the police took the incident as a routine matter despite the fact that most of the people involved in criminal activities like robbery and drugs selling are residing in Bilal Town. “It is a clear fact that the police officials have joined hands with the criminals residing in the area which encourages the criminals to commit crime openly while the police later take their shares from them.”
A senior Police officer while requesting anonymity said that there are several areas in the rural suburbs of the federal capital that are no-go zones for the capital police, including the area of Zia Masjid. “In these areas, the capital police cannot launch operations as the criminals are backed by some strong politicians of the area, which pressurize the capital police to take any action against their men,” the officer added. However, Shahzad Town SHO and other cops in the police station did not attend phone calls for their version.
